A beautifully marked Landseer. Presented to perfection, the white glistened - such hard work. Clean expression. A sound mover.

SANDBEARS RED ROSE

Good overall type and all in proportion. Sensible bone and feet. Eye a little loose at the moment but this could tighten as she develops.

SHEENMARIE ORPHAN ANNIE

Attractive good moving baby. Correct dentition like 1. and 2.

EVANPARK MARILYN ROSE

Stood out in a big class. Perfect weight and muscle for age. Filled my eye from the start. Very flashy stood and moving. Well angulated front and back. Just the right reach of neck. An athletic youngster. Best Puppy in Show.

BROOKLYNBEAR PICASSO

Pleasing head. Good make and shape. Nice bone. Unlucky to meet 1. And should do well in the future.

EVANPARK LIBERTY OF THE SEAS

Nothing overdone here. Nice feet and a good mover.

SHALOWSEAS ON THE DOUBLE OF TALLISBAY

First in a remarkably strong class. Presented and prepared to perfection. Lovely substance and a really feminine head type. A powerful mover. All three winners showed animation.

ABBEYDORE SEA FIORE

Excellent bone and really good feet. A delight to go over. Good angles and strong topline.

PARADESO FOXY LADY

Smaller Brown. Lovely straight coat groomed out to enhance a good profile. Another bitch whose head is not overdone.

OHOIS EURORA'S NORTHERN LIGHT

Good bone supporting a feminine, attractive head. Good lay of shoulder. Shown well. Moved with drive.

SOLWAYBAY QUEEN OF CO MAYO

A very respectable overall picture. Closer behind than 1. and a slightly loose eye which could rectify itself as she develops.

SOLWAYBAY SAMIRA

Well groomed, trimmed and handled. Like all my class winners, a very acceptable headpiece.

CANNON BEARS NEVER FORGET IMP

Quite a showstopper for one so young. A bright future in prospect. Beautiful, glamorous expression. Correct stop and length of muzzle. Nicely ribbed up and correct amount of bone. Simply super balance. Turn of stifle just right. Real quality all through. Of course, presented and handled with style. Moved with drive. Bitch CC and Best in Show.

SEAFAR MAMBO

A large well-formed young lady and an excellent mover. Heavier in the head than 1. but a very respectable example.

MIDNIGHT LADY'S PROMISE AT NORDICANGEL (IMP HUN)

Smaller and with less bone than 1. and 2., also closer in front. A satisfying overall picture.

SEAFAR SAMBA

A very nice Brown. Good feet and bone. Really well prepared and presented. Very strong on the move and this made the difference between 1. and 2..

STORY REX EMILIA ROMAGNA IMP IT

Lovely Landseer. Such a scrumptious picture when stacked up. Pleasing expression. Nice reach of neck. Sound topline and tail set.

QUIETSTORM SOLSTICE

Excellent presentation once again but a little weak in topline. A very respectable exhibit.

CAYUGA SLAM DUNK AT SANDBEARS IMP

Good size, type and overall condition. Attractive feminine expression. The best mover coming and going. Nice spring of rib.

SANDBEARS PERFECT STRANGER AT SOLWAYBAY

Smaller than 1. Well shown and stronger topline than 3.

STELAMAH LADY PIAGGIO

Lovely feet here. A bit weak in back and moved a little close.

CEWRIRDWR LLYN GWYNANT

Large but feminine. Nice eye. Well muscled up. The odd splash of white does not detract when there is quality underneath.

SHALOWSEAS SHE'A A DIAMOND AT WATERBEARS

Smaller than 1.. Again a tight eye helping to create a good expression. Good feet with depth of pad.

HANNINGFIELD WATER WILLOW

Lost to 1. and 2. on eye and feet. A very presentable overall picture, nicely handled.

CH. SANDBEARS AMERICANO

Another showstopper like Yearling Bitch. Such a glamorous picture. Real quality all through. Powerful but always feminine. Heavy bone but nothing gross here. Super coat. Firm topline and correct tail set. Beautifully presented and professionally prepared. I liked the yearling slightly better on the move. Reserve Bitch CC.

IR CH., CH. BEECREEK'S BROOKLYNBEAR COMEDY

Well angulated example. Smaller than 1. and quite a feminine expression albeit ears a fraction big. Many marks of quality here. Sound mover.

TAWISCARA ROXANNE

Nice make and shape. Feet not so "newfie" as 1. and 2.. Good on the move.

HANNINGFIELD BLUE MOON AT PARADESO

A beautiful picture enhanced by excellent presentation and preparation. Good reach of neck. Moved with power and grace. Correct coat. I would prefer the eye a bit darker.

BEAUTENOIR UNFORGETTABLE AT MERRYBEAR

More tuck-up than 1. Again well turned out. Carried tail correctly when moving - something not common enough at the moment. Right muscle and bone.

HANNINGFIELD PRINCESS LEIA

Like 1. and 2. good feet - again not common enough. A little heavy in head but a very respectable example.

SEAFAR SAMBA

Already critiqued.

BRIDGESTONE CALLAWAY

Good size and substance. Straight, heavy coat. Correct weight and muscle tone. Eye a bit too light.

MAYOSS WHITER SHADE OF PALE TO MILLTHORPE

Thank you all very much for your great invitation to judge. In many ways I consider it a greater privilege than Crufts. My thanks to Lucinda and Elaine for stewarding so as to make all go smoothly and Andrea and Gary for a first class show in a perfect venue. I thank my fellow judge, Lucy Stephenson and David Butcher for liking my Ticket winner and Best Bitch Puppy.

It is 9½ years since I judged newfies and I have not seen them in the ring since 2000. I had, of course, several preconceptions, many of which proved to be wrong, for better and for worse. I guessed, wrongly, that the bitches would be too small but very typey. Again, I guessed, wrongly, that the Landseers and Browns would no longer be able to hold their own against the Blacks. You are all aficionados of our breed and I hope that my comments will be helpful. Obviously these are only my opinions.

Much of the breed type resides in the head and eyes are crucial. Many exhibits had loose, light or round eyes. Almond shape and almond colour melts the heart. Ears were often too big and quite a few expressions were "doggy" - i.e. heavy jowls. The above faults did not apply to my principal winners. Dentition, as I expected, was very good indeed. It would have been nice to see "tombstone" incisors rather than the tiny ones which prevailed but scissor bite is scissor bite. A significant number had dirty teeth - I am told that getting bones in the UK is now a problem! Not the dog's fault of course. Beautiful clean teeth do help in the group though.

Feet need attention. Catspaws with a real depth of pad were not common. In general good bone was. Excessive toeing in (almost crossing) was common enough to be worrying so shoulder set needs to be worked on. Tails were generally excellent - well rooted and good length.

I was told that several top winning bitches were not entered because of seasons/matings, etc.. I was nevertheless happy with my final lineup.
